A long time ago.....in a music room far, far away

The kids are learning the theme song to Star Wars on recorder. It was really cool to hear them practicing in the halls. Check out the girls performing at our YouTube channel

Fun With Science!

Today we had a successful science period with both Grade 4/5 classes. It was exciting to see the anticipation on the students faces when we began the "Elephant Toothpaste" experiment which had failed earlier in the year. Mrs. M had made a perfect volcano for our foam to shoot out of in a very limited time. As we added each ingredient the kids became more excited. And......it finally worked! After the first successful trial we tried another one in a clear container for the kids to see. It was a lot of fun!

My "New Math" Analogy

The other day I walked into my colleagues room in the middle if one if her parent conferences. They were discussing "old school" math and "new math." First off, I find those terms kind of comical because they are not correct. Never in the Math curriculum did it ever say that the standard algorithm is the only way to teach equations. I began thinking of the differences of thought between how we as parents were taught and they way things are now. Analogies came to mind. My favourite one I came up with had to do with cooking. Think of it this way, if you want something cooked fast and efficiently you use a microwave. If you want the best results you slow cook your food using the best techniques possible. In other words, if you take time to learn the strategies in math, or cooking, you get better results. If you want things done fast then use a microwave.

Clay art responses to reading

After the Holiday break I decided to have the students read assigned books and do daily responses. Once they completed their book they were given options for final project presentations. Many of the kids decided to do clay art pieces that depicted a character or scene from the book. So far, they have been incredible responses using fantastic art skills. Great job Rm. 14!
