Rock, Paper, Scissors

Have you ever dreamed of winning a Rock, Paper, Scissors challenge? Well now you can! One box of cereal is equal to one life for Heritage School's challenge. So, try your best and bring in as much cereal as you can! Everyone gets to start with one life. Each time you lose a game to an opponent, you lose a life. When you lose all your lives you are out! The challenge is on November 28, but you can still bring in cereal until December 6. When you are out of the game you can still cheer for your your friends. Every time you  bring in a box of cereal, you are making a difference in our community and a child's Christmas better. Please help us today!

Cereal Drive

Are you wondering what the cereal drive is? We need your help to bring in 200 boxes of cereal by November 28 for people in need this holiday season. A couple weeks ago, we made a list of what we would like for christmas. Then, we found out that there are families in our community that wanted a lot less than what we wanted, including food. Food! That's something we take for granted. We always have food. Many families get hampers during the holidays, but cereal is often an overlooked non-perishable food item. Thats why we need your help! Please bring cereal to Heritage School.

Using ColAR in Class

I have been trying out the use of Augmented Reality software in class and found it very motivational for the kids. This past week I used an app called "ColAR" to show what it could do. Students that brought in donations for Terry Fox were given a shoe to colour. Once they finished, I showed them how it can come to life. Very Cool!

Katie's shoe POPS off the page!

                             Amazing!

Buddy Learning Day 1

It is important for both younger and older students to be involved in buddy learning. Both students will gain valuable lessons from these sessions and it also builds school community.

App is Down

Hello families,

I tried to make some changes to the app (adding awards, pictures, etc....) and discovered it is under construction for the moment. I will get it done as soon as it's back online.

Place Value

We've been working on Place Value in Math to start the year. The Smart Board has been an excellent helper and motivational tool for this. Remember, in Gr. 4, students need to recognize numbers in the thousands. The knowledge is greater in Gr. 5, where students need to recognize numbers in the hundred thousands and millions. Having discussions with kids about numbers is a great idea. At this age, have them say numbers of expensive items or populations. Having conversations about math greatly enhances children's understanding of concepts. PLACE VALUE is probably the most important concept for young children to understand.

Our 1st Read-Aloud

We are just beginning our first theme study on Mysteries. I'm am excited to announce that a plan to have one of Canada's best mystery writers come to our class is in the works. Eric Wilson has been one of Canada's most well-known mystery writers for the past 40 years. Most of his books take place in areas of Canada. Our first read-aloud will be on the book "Terror in Winnipeg!"

Successful Tech Info Night!!

What a great evening of information and answered questions. Thanks so much to all the parents who attended our "Technology Information Evening." First Day

What a wonderful first day of school. It was great meeting all my new students and getting to know them all. The students learned a lot about how my class works and some of the class rules. We then created a set of "beliefs" for the classroom. I was very impressed with how well everyone participated and was actively engaged. We talked a lot about being active participants / listeners and how we need to believe in our abilities in order to achieve success. We even watched a clip from Star Wars to stress this point. I put it up on our YouTube channel so you can see it again. I reminded the class that my motto is "Do Your Best!" It was a great first day and I'm excited to start next week.

See you all Monday!

Rocks Rock! And so do minerals

Room 23 had a great rock investigation yesterday. We closely examined different rock/mineral samples with magnifying glasses and described in scientific detail what each looked like. It was a great hands-on science class that I am looking forward to doing with Room 14 soon.

Track & Field Thursday

The unpredictable weather is.......unpredictable. So, do not assume because it is raining in the morning that Track & Field will be cancelled Thursday. As far as we know, it is still on. So, be sure to come prepared, just in case. The rain date is set for next Thursday if necessary.

Silent Movie Time!!!

Wow! It's that time of year again. It's so exciting to see how well the students work in their groups to create storyboards for their silent movies. There are a whole lot of great ideas coming out, which just goes to show you how creative kids can be. Today, we started production on a film that Cameron and I worked on. We did this so that the other students could see how the process of putting their ideas from their storyboards will look when we actually film them. There is a lot of things that they did not realize they would have to think about and this sparked some interesting discussions. I'm looking forward to producing all of their wonderful ideas and then showcasing them at our annual film festival in mid-June.

Tech time with Kinders

Do you know why tech buddies is important for both grade groups?
First off, the older kids get a chance to help the Kinders which makes them feel successful and happy. Room 14 enjoys teaching the Kinders all they know about technology.
Sometimes it gets silly, but for the most part they are both learning a lot.
Second, its great for both age groups to work yogether, especially the Kinders who look up to the older kids.
Today, they helped the Kinders with Kids Pix and a great website called ABCYA.
We had a lot of fun working and learning with our younger friends.

SJSD Youth Forum

What a great day at the SJSD Youth Forum year end windup. The KARE Team had a lot of fun and learned a lot from the Me to We leaders, as well as, the other schools throughout the division. The amount of things that were accomplished this year in our small school division was amazing! I'm especially proud of our KARE Team members who did an excellent job presenting first!

Well done Heritage!
