Awesome Artwork

Wow! I'm so impressed with the students artwork that they just finished. The project was an Integrated Arts project with artist Diane Cameron. It was based on individuality and differences and the piece was centered around the eye. The kids learned about artists such as; Matisse, Picasso and Pollock. Enjoy the slideshow of their work.

At the SJSD Youth Forum PD session on Sustainability. Very excited to come back tomorrow with some of my students. I hope the students treated the guest teacher well this afternoon.

What an amazing day for Winnipeg! The atmosphere this past week around the city, province and country is / was awesome! Even with the Jets loss today they got a standing ovation and the vibe from the city is glowing. At school, we had a "Blue Friday" for the Jets home opener. It was great to see how many kids were so pumped up for this and it really brought a whole sense of community and togetherness to our school and also the same connection to our city and province. This was truly an amazing week for Winnipeg that our kids and ourselves will always remember. So, on Thanksgiving, or any time this weekend, give thanks to how this has brought us all together in such a moving and energetic way.

First Drama Club was today. It was fun! I forgot that we skipped over a lot of the basics last year because we had so many returning members. I received a lot more forms for the club, so it looks like it will be a good group. I look forward to our next meeting, but we have to wait another week as this Monday is Thanksgiving and there's no school.

Today we started a novel study for our Theme Study on Mysteries. The book is, "Mystery at Cranberry Farm," by Lynn Manuel. We also had an assessment in Place Value which they worked hard at. At the end of the day we went over the TUSC activity and linked it with Edmodo. It was a little confusing for the students, so I strongly suggest they try to open and send files to me to get the hang of it so this can run smoothly. The class was excellent today! They worked hard and listened very well.

Wow! Another busy day for me. There were a little too many reminders to stay on task and stop talking today, but we were still productive. This class has some amazing math minds and they have picked up on place value very well. Soon we will be moving into "Monster Math," which the kids love. I'm looking forward to an exciting and fun-filled October!

We had our second assembly today. Cross was awarded Athlete of the Month and Serena and Emily did a great job hosting the assembly. We also had our first Roots of Empathy class today. The students were introduced to our class baby, "Olivia," which is Emily's sister, but will only get to meet her in a couple weeks.

Sorry I missed updating yesterday. I was too busy watching the first JETS game in 15 years! Anyway, I'm back to update you on today's events. We completed a really impressive writing assignment as a class today which you can view on the Blue & Gold board in the hallway. The piece was written with contributions from the entire class and is titled, "Why We're Blue & Gold!" The kids did a great job on it and they should be very proud. We also started brainstorming a writing piece titled, "Scars" or "My Spooky Story." This came about because we had a dynamic class discussion on the different scars we have. I anticipate that this will be a very detailed writing assignment as many of the kids had long stories about their scars.
We also started looking at the Scientific Method in Science today. Ask the kids to do the pepsi can magic trick for you and then explain how they did it. It's pretty cool!

Monday, Monday

A good start to the week, but I had to remind some students of our class beliefs. So far, it's been a good start to the year. We've accomplished a lot of things and gotten routines in place for the year. This afternoon Mrs. Waters and I met our artist for The Integrated Arts for this term. I am very excited to have Diane Cameron back in my class to do a visual art piece with the kids. We did a fantastic project last year with Diane that the kids were really proud of. It was a great session today and I am looking forward to November, when she into the classroom to share her expertise.

Friday

Wow! What a busy day of technology, team building and math number sense. We now have all students set up with Edmodo accounts and they were busy finding out what the site has to offer. We discussed different ways to write numbers (standard, written form, expanded form) and wrote definitions for these and some place value concepts. Near the end of the day we played some team building games to build our classroom community.

First Post of 2011

Well, here we go again. It's been a long time since I've blogged, but I intend to keep up to date daily with a quick note of what we have done, or interesting things that have happened throughout the day.
